Open a VCF file on a Windows PC

A .vcf (vCard) file can hold one contact or thousands. Windows' built-in handlers were made for single business cards, which is why a phone's contact backup seems to open “only one contact”.

What Windows does with a .vcf

  • Outlook (classic) opens the first contact of the file as a new contact card – the rest are ignored.
  • Windows Contacts (older Windows) imports it one by one.
  • Notepad shows the raw text: BEGIN:VCARD … END:VCARD per contact – fine for a peek, hard to read with photos or quoted-printable encoding.

Open the file in Cardmend: every contact appears in a list with names, phones, emails, addresses and photos, including vCard 2.1 files from old phones with quoted-printable text and non-Latin characters. Export to Excel if you want to work with it in a spreadsheet (VCF to Excel).

Import it somewhere

  • Google Contacts: contacts.google.com › Import › select the .vcf – imports all contacts.
  • iCloud: icloud.com/contacts › ⚙ / + › Import Contact.
  • Outlook: needs a CSV for bulk import – see VCF imports only one contact.

Fix your contact file in the browser. Cardmend converts contacts between vCard (.vcf 2.1/3.0/4.0), Excel and CSV (Google, Outlook, generic), merges duplicates with a review screen, normalises phone numbers and splits or joins VCF files – in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Preview, duplicate review and phone check are free for the whole file; exports are free up to 50 contacts, and a $9 lifetime license removes the limit.

Questions and answers

Is a VCF file safe to open?

It's plain text. Opening it in a viewer or text editor doesn't run anything.

Can I edit a VCF?

Yes – in Excel after converting, then convert back; or in a text editor for small changes.
